Respite care in Minnesota, MN

A respite stay is a short, paid stay in a licensed assisted living facility — a week or a month — while a family caregiver recovers, travels, or tests whether a move would work. The Minnesota Department of Health does not record which of the 5,098 licensed facilities around Minnesota offer it, so this page lists none; that would be a guess. Call (888) 282-PALM with the town and the dates, and we ask the facilities that have a furnished room open.

What to expect

Respite is quoted per day at roughly the monthly rate divided by thirty, often with a short-stay premium, and the facility does the same nursing assessment it does for a permanent move. A signed short-term service plan is required under 144G just as for a long stay. Dementia-care respite is available only at facilities holding the designation — the 1,220 in this ring are listed here.

Who uses it

Families whose parent lives at home with them and needs cover; families waiting for a permanent room; and, frequently, a family testing a specific home before committing. A trial stay at a small home in Minnesota costs less than a mistaken move.

Where to start

The town pages show every licensed facility with its record; the small homes on the small-homes page are the ones most often able to take a short stay on short notice.
