What the licence means in Minnesota

Since 2021, "assisted living facility" is a licence under Minnesota Statutes chapter 144G, issued and inspected by the Department of Health. It covers housing plus assisted living services — help with daily living, medication management, nursing arranged through the facility — in any building size. A licence with dementia care is a second, stricter tier. The licence does not say what it costs, whether pets are welcome, or whether short stays are offered; those are the questions Palmelle asks operators directly.

Where the facilities are

The five towns with the most licences: Brooklyn Park (239), Minneapolis (180), Brooklyn Center (149), St. Paul (126), Bloomington (108). The full table, with scored counts and dementia-care counts per town, is on the service areas page. Here they are grouped by size, which in this part of the metro is the real choice:

Small homes, six beds or fewer — 3,090 facilities

A licensed residential house with a handful of residents, usually nurse-owned. Most of the ring's licences are this. How to judge one.

Communities of 20 beds or more — 583 facilities

Apartment-style, with dining rooms, activity calendars and, often, a dementia-care wing. The larger ones in the ring reach 400 beds.
